Christmas Bark

What makes this recipe so great is that the topping can easily be changed out for something different!
The original recipe called for M&M's for the topping, but not wanting to spend $12 for a large bag of M&M's, I went for crushed pretzels instead and got a salty crunch flavor! :)
You will need 6 easy ingredients for this recipe!

Ingredients Needed:
2 packs of saltine crackers
5 sticks of unsalted butter...yes 5!
3 cups packed brown sugar
4 (12 oz) bags of semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 bag of pretzels, crushed
1 jar sprinkles to make it more festive!

I like to make my treats in bulk so I can share them! You can always cut down the measurements to yield a smaller serving amount.

Preheat your over to 350 degrees F. Line 2 baking pans with tin foil and coat with cooking spray. Line your baking pans with your saltine crackers and set aside.
In a medium-sized saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar together. I melted the butter first, then added the brown sugar and whisked them together while bringing them to a boil. Continue to whisk your butter and brown sugar until bubbling.
Pour your mixture over your saltine crackers in an even layer. Easier said than done if I'm being completely honest! You'll want to pour slowly. Some of my saltines tried to swim away with my initial pour because I went too fast. Therefore, take a brush and spread out your mixture. If it get's under the saltines, this is fine. It won't affect the look or taste of your bark! :)

Bake for about 12-15 minutes. If you notice it bubbling, don't fret, this is normal.
Remove from your oven and top immediately with the chocolate chips. Then bake for another 3-5 minutes, or until chips look "soft" and "shiny".
Use a rubber spatula to spread and smooth your chocolate.
Top with your crushed pretzels (or topping of your choice) and sprinkles! You may want to press the pretzels down into your melted chocolate. I did not do this and unfortunately many of my pretzel pieces fell off during the breaking process of my bark. :(
Let cool and place in refrigerator until chocolate sets. If you are in a hurry, you can lay a towel down in your refrigerator and carefully set the pan on top. I do this because I'm always afraid the glass will crack from the heat of the pan. Although be advised this is not ideal as the drastic temp change can warp your baking pan.
Once your chocolate has set, remove pan from your refrigerator and break apart your bark. This will be messy! I started with a corner and lifted it off the pan, then peeled the foil away and used what little muscle I have to break it into pieces! Another option might be to cut it while the chocolate is still warm. You may just get a different kind of messy doing it this way. Either way, your bark will be very tasty once cooled! :)
